Storm Water Could Power Steam Trains

East Strasburg Pennsylvania USA - The Strasburg Railroad has asked the Strasburg Township supervisors to sponsor their application of a "growing greener" grant from the state.

The request, made to the supervisors on 8 Sep 2010, would allow the railroad to recycle and reuse storm water that runs off its property.

"We want to reclaim, recycle, and reuse the water that runs off our building and the macadam area," said Craig Lefever, the railroad's compliance officer.

The Strasburg Rail Road uses 7,000 to 10,000 gallons of water in its locomotives, which make 850 trips a year, he said.

"The water would be used as "fuel" for our steam locomotives," Lefever said.

To apply for the grant, the railroad needs a sponsor to oversee the project. The railroad is applying for about $15,000 to $20,000.

Lefever said the project's first phase would be an environmental study, along with engineering, design, and preliminary work. The second phase would consist of construction.

"We would need to install inlets, pipes, and dig a retention basin," Lefever said.

Supervisor Tom Willig questioned the potential costs and liability to the township. The supervisors agreed to sponsor the grant, contingent upon the recommendation of their solicitor.
