The reason for having a guard in the leading coach can be plainly seen in this photo as the driver leans out for a better view ahead leaving Breitlauenen siding. Also, notice on the roof, on this side of the pantograph, there is a box-like structure. The resistor banks are encased in a box mounted inside the locomotive with a blower supplying air to cool them. I suspect this is an exhaust hatch that's opened to release hot air from the resistor banks while the blower is running. It appears to be open in the photo of the Down train that just passed and mainly closed in the Up train. Both locomotives are He 2/2 but were constructed on different dates. Number 63, the Up train in this case, was built in 1912 while the Down train, Number 11, was built in 1914. |
