2-4-0STT (Saddle Tank Tender) "Blanche" was built by the Hunslet Engine Company in 1893 for the Penrhyn Quarry Railway as an 0-4-0ST+T. Purchased by the Ffestiniog in December 1963 when her gauge was adjusted from Penrhyn Quarry gauge of 1 foot 10 1\2 inches to Ffestiniog gauge of 1 foot 11 1/2 inches and the cab roof was re-profiled to clear Garnedd Tunnel. In 1972 she was rebuilt as a 2-4-0STT with an extended frame, new piston valve cylinders, converted to oil burning, and superheated incorporating a new tender with extended cab. In this photo the Wipers have completed their work and Blanche is about to move away from her shed to pick up carriages and proceed to Porthmadog with her first train of the day. This will be the second train to depart Porthmadog today and follows "Merddin Emrys" earlier departure.
