Board members at Alston's scenic narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway are delighted that their latest acquisition, a locomotive called "Barber", successfully experienced its first steaming in 65 years.
The Greens of Leeds' ex-Harrogate gasworks 0-6-2ST locomotive was fired up at Alan Keef & Company, Ross on Wye, where it has been undergoing a massive restoration.
Earlier this year, "Barber" was displayed at the Great Yorkshire show, in Harrogate, following an invitation from the show president to return the historic Harrogate locomotive to its former home turf.
It was well received by Harrogate people, many of whom could remember it at work in the town.
Many plan to travel to Alston for the "Return to Steam Gala" and see "Barber" in steam once again.
South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society deputy chairman Brian Craven was instrumental in bringing the locomotive back from its retirement and restoring it to its former glory.
It was fitting that he was present for the first steaming.
Brian said the society was delighted that "Barber" would soon be in Alston where it will have a massive part to play in the future of the organization.
