Builders have broken ground on a £5.6 Million redevelopment project on South Tynedale Railway.
The plans are to extend the 3.5 mile line from Lintley Hall to Slaggyford.
It was awarded £4.25 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014 as part of a three year development project.
The railway hopes this expansion could also be the first step to achieve its ultimate goal of joining with the main line at Haltwhistle.
The original line at Slaggyford closed 40 years ago.
Heather Palmer, society general manager said, "This is an exciting time in our history where we upgrade and add to our beautiful heritage attraction, but also prepare the ground to reach the second original station on the old Alston Branch Line. The preparation of the track bed must be completed in such a way to facilitate future smooth running of our trains and to protect our heritage structures along the way."
