Introduction
Here's another heritage two foot (610 millimeter) narrow gauge railway (ya gotta luv'em) located in a somewhat remote part of Cumbria in northern England. The area lies north of the rugged, barren, mountains and hills of the North Pennines AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The line generally runs northwest southeast following the valley of the South Tyne River between Alston in the south to Slaggyford in the north. The route is about 4 1/2 miles (7.25 kliks) long running in typical rolling hills of English sheep farming country. The South Tyne Trail, a footpath which parallels the railway along the route, is part of the 268 mile long Pennine Way national trail.
