This impressive coaling tower, or coaling stage as it is called here, is the first item one notices upon walking onto the grounds of the Didcot Railway Centre. Unlike typical North American coaling towers which use gravity to feed coal from a bunker into a locomotive's tender, in this building coal is loaded into small carts then manually pushed out that covered door over the track then dumped into an awaiting steam locomotive tender or tank engine bunker.
