BC Hydro Ready to Sell Off Land Purchased in Jordan River
30 November 2017

BC Hydro is preparing to sell off the land it bought in a small Vancouver Island hamlet at risk of being devastated in a major earthquake.

The Crown corporation bought up properties in Jordan River at market value after a study determined a hydro dam above the hamlet would likely break in a major seismic event, destroying homes below it.

While 10 of 11 property owners along the waterfront accepted deals, one lone holdout has kept a vacation home there.

In addition to snapping up homes, BC Hydro also purchased a 15 hectare swath of flood zone near the townsite.

If sold, the land will be rezoned to ensure that homes cannot be built in the flood zone.

The Pacheedaht First Nation has shown interest in the land, which could become part of a treaty negotiation.
