Grosmont Yorkshire England United Kingdom - Teesside rail enthusiasts and nostalgia fans were again expected to steam along to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) today to bid farewell to an icon of the rails.
Today marks the final day of service for one of the railway's favourite steam locomotives, LNER A4 4-6-2 number 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, before it retires for a three year, £600,000 overhaul.
And if yesterday's crowds are anything to go by, the second day of its farewell weekend is again likely to attract train fans in their droves.
Platforms were well populated yesterday as the distinctive streamlined loco, which holds the postwar steam speed record at 112 mph, hauled a rake of vintage coaches along the picturesque Grosmont to Pickering route.
As yesterday, items of Gresley nostalgia will feature at both Pickering and Grosmont stations today, while there will also be a celebratory art exhibition with Christopher Ware, artist in residence, at Levisham Station.
And at 18.15 an emotional farewell ceremony will be held at the south end of Grosmont Station, with rousing music from the Malton White Star band.
Tickets can be purchased on the day from any NYMR booking office and £1 in every £5 of all ticket income from the weekend will go towards the cost of the locomotive's overhaul.
