Brunel's broad gauge track, also known as Brunel gauge, was originally just 7 feet wide but was enlarged by 1/4 inch to accommodate clearance problems identified during early testing. Broad gauge lines in Britain were gradually converted to dual gauge or standard gauge after 1864. The last remaining track of Brunel's broad gauge was converted to standard gauge over just one weekend in 1892.
