This month, the Tramway Museum Society is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Crich.
In 1959, the society acquired the Crich site to continue the preservation of vintage trams and their valuable history, allowing present and future generations to experience them first hand.
To commemorate the incredible milestone, the Tramway Museum Society has a fantastic programme of events and activities lined up over the weekend of Saturday, 21 Sep 2019, and Sunday, 22 Sep 2019.
The celebration starts at 10:00 on Saturday and lasts until 17:30 on Sunday, so head down and experience what it would be like to ride the streets of a bygone Britain on authentic, vintage public transport.
Celebrating 60 Years
As well as intensive tram services with all operational tramcars running throughout the weekend, there are a variety of activities planned across Crich Tramway Village for the whole family to enjoy.
Visitors can participate in photographic line-ups on the Depot Fan, ride the vintage Barnsley Bus, view the Whetstone tram models in the Exhibition Hall, undertake a guided tour of the site, and experience live music.
For the children there's face painting and balloon modelling.
The village also boasts a number of facilities which have been developed since the early days of the Tramway Museum Society's arrival in Crich.
These include the Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail, Stephenson Discovery Centre, the Tram Depot, where you can view an extensive tramcar collection, and the Workshop Viewing Gallery, which is the hub of the restoration and maintenance of the village's tramcars.
There are exhibitions at the Assembly Rooms, including The Mobile Post Box, Mail By Tram, and Survive and Thrive, The Electric Era, and at the Exhibition Hall, such as Michael Holroyd Smith, Electrifying The Future.
Take a Break
Over the weekend, The Red Lion Pub will be open from 11:00 to 17:00 serving hot and cold drinks, including a fine selection of cask ales, bottled beers, lagers, and soft drinks.
A range of sandwiches and snacks are available from 12:00 to 15:00.
From 10:00 to 17:00 Rita's Tearooms will be offering sandwiches, mouth-watering cakes, and drinks, as well as hot food from 12:00 to 15:00.
The village also has an ice-cream parlour on-site, with seating available outside, which will be serving ice-cream and hot drinks from 11:30 to 17:00.
And if you're after a souvenir from the day, you can browse The Forge Gift Shop or visit Barnett's Traditional Sweet Shop for a taste of nostalgia.
