There are a huge number of heritage railways in Britain and most of them seem to hold, at least yearly, a Gala (pronounce that GAW-law) to showcase their equipment and draw visitors. Typically these Galas are steam or diesel only, or sometimes both together.
The Severn Valley Railway is no slouch when it comes to putting on one of these Galas. This year they ran one for four days from 18-21 April 2024. While it would have been great to attend this event, that wasn't possible this year, it being just too far and too expensive for a visit from Canada.
However, you could have participated from your armchair thanks to web cameras and the internet. The weather was overcast with slight drizzles the first couple of days but the sun popped out on Saturday. My armchair stayed nice and dry while grabbing webcam screen captures on Saturday the 20th. You can view the results below along with a description and timetables for their Spring Gala 2024 stolen from the Severn Valley Railway website.SPRING STEAM GALA 2024

Since the Severn Valley Railway was first reopened from Bridgnorth to Hampton Loade by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1970, it has brought joy to countless rail enthusiasts and visitors. This richly illustrated history tells the story from the very beginning as an independent railway in 1862, through the Great Western and British Rail periods and the closure of the line in 1963, followed by its triumphant reopening as a preserved line, all the way up to the modern day. Along the way we learn about a cast of fascinating characters, the role of the railways in the war, and even two separate power struggles that belie the quiet, perhaps even quaint nature of this quintessential country branch line.

Over the weekend of the 18-21 Apr 2024 the SVR's coveted Spring Steam Gala was one of surprises and timeless scenes this year. With last minute substitutes and celebrity cameos, there was plenty to enjoy as always. With a tank engine heavy line up, the Gala held an atmosphere of branch line about it. Star guest from the Bluebell Railway was London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SC) A1 Terrier number 72 "Fenchurch" which put in some fine performances on the Hampton Loade locals, while Weymouth Pannier Tank 1369 (despite substituting last minute for new build Grange 6880 "Betton Grange") looked very at home on both goods and passenger trains. Lambton Colliery Tank number 29 completed the line up of guest engines. The lines home fleet was in fine form, with recently out shopped Stanier Mogul 13268 sporting a fresh coat of LMS Lined Black, being one of many highlights paired with the lines matching set of Stanier coaches. Also on static display between running-in turns was Locomotive Services owned LNER A2 60532 "Blue Peter" which despite it not running at the event was still a bit of a crowd puller. All in all this was a fantastic event. The timetable was superb with a tone of variety, goods, local, and express passenger trains. The DMU was, from what I could see, a useful addition to help relieve the steam locos, and the weather was superb to top it off. Many thanks to all involved in organising and running yet another super SVR Gala - 21 Apr 2024
