Today's Fleet

    CP Rail's locomotive fleet totals 1,282 units. Of these, 1,061 operate as line and road locomotives, with the remaining 221 committed to yard operations. This total also breaks down as 354 first generation units, 450 second generation and 478 third generation.
 
    The first generation group, purchased between 1943 and 1959, comprises 221 yard and 133 road locomotives. The 450 second generation units were purchased between 1954 and 1966 and are generally in line and road use. The 478 third generation units are current-production mainline freight locomotives.

    Prior to the ten-year motive power replacement program, any attrition that took place in the locomotive fleet occurred by chance through fires and wrecks, and by units becoming irreparable. On average over the last ten years, the fleet was depleted by about six units a year.
