The Rebuild Program
The heart of the 10-year program to
revitalize CP Rail's motive power is the rebuilding of 417 first and second generation units. Current planning calls for all
work to be done in CP Rail's shops with 206 rebuilds assigned to Angus Shops and 211 to Ogden Shops. Generally, Angus will
rebuild all MLW locomotives, while Ogden will handle the GM units. The work will be spread evenly over the
10-year period for the most efficient use of the shops and to avoid tying up too many units at any one time.
Locomotives to be rebuilt will go into the shops on a schedule that coincides with their normally required overhaul.
The rebuilding program is not to be considered a glorified overhaul. The units that emerge from the shops in
Montreal and Calgary will be substantially new locomotives built on the mainframes of older units. They will be new in
appearance and profile, new in technology and fittings - designed to perform their assigned tasks reliably over an extended
economic life expectancy.
