The most obvious changes will be the cut down short hood
on the yard fleet and the refurbished cabs. But, the rebuilding will apply to all systems and components using a mix of
state-of-the-art and proven technologies. Detailed standards have been set for the work. Some of the highlights
include:
- complete dismantling of the locomotive down to the frame;
- sandblasting, cleaning, checking for cracks and repainting the frame;
- modifying stairwells to the type used on SD40-2 locomotives, entailing altering the deck at the four
corners;
- installation of new style uncoupling levers;
- alteration of traction motor cable placement on certain models, mounted on rubber cleats on all models, wood blocks
are no longer acceptable;
- installation of snow plow receptacles at each end;
- overhaul of truck frames and associated equipment and installation of new wheels with latest design suspension
bearings installed;
- overhaul of journal boxes;
- overhaul and rebuilding of engines to meet highest possible standards.
