Renumbering
Most of the units that emerge from the rebuilding program
will be new not only in appearance but will also bear new identification numbers in keeping with their assignment to new
tasks and to eliminate the confusion of manufacturers in the current 8000 series.
Of the 211 units to be rebuilt at Ogden Shops, 199 are classified as General Motors GP-9 and 12
as GP-7. The current numbers of the GP-9 units fall into four groupings: 8483 to 8546, 8611
to 8708, 8801 to 8823 and 8825 to 8839. One hundred and ninety-four of these units are destined for yard
service and will be renumbered consecutively from 1512 to 1705. The remaining five - units 8492, 8518, 8530, 8615 and 8619 -
will continue in road use and will carry new numbers from 8200 to 8204.
The GP-7 units, currently carrying numbers between 8409 and 8424, all will go into yard service
and will be renumbered 1500 to 1511. The 206 locomotives to be rebuilt at Angus Shops include 69 units classified as MLW
RS-18. Currently numbered from 8730 to 8800, these units will continue in road service but be renumbered from
1800 to 1868. The numbers on all other units in the Angus program, including the six units for commuter service, will not be
changed.
