Little red four-wheel caboose number 49 was built in 1881, one of 88 built by the company between 1871 and 1885. For 57 years the caboose worked on the Rio Grande's narrow gauge system. In 1938 the car body was sold to an Animas River placer mine for use as a bunkhouse. At that time the book value was US$243. In 1984 the Colorado Railroad Museum purchased the car body and volunteers completely restored it to its current four-wheel configuration.
