Oregon Railroad & Navigation 197
OR&N number 197 is a 4-6-2 Pacific type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1905 for the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company. The locomotive was acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad and eventually donated to the City of Portland. The Friends of OR&N 197 restoration projects included hand-crafting custom-made toolboxes, running boards, handrails, and a deck on top of the tender. Pistons were removed for inspection while the crew machined new rings. The team of volunteers dedicate two days a week to move progress forward towards steaming the locomotive for operation.
Oregon Rail Heritage Center
Long before the 10:00 grand opening on 22 Sep 2012 people were at the gate waiting to get into the Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Over 6,300 attended the two-day event. The opening and two preview events raised US$21,000 for ORHF.
"The best time is with the visitors, young and old, dads, moms, kids, grandparents. There's lots of interest to see the work being done. I used to think most people knew the locomotives were operable. But many are excited to find out we work to make them run. They are way more excited with the prospect of seeing a live steam locomotive." - Pat Tracy - Friends of the 4449 Fireman.
