Tehachapi Loop Scene of Derailment

An eastbound BNSF train with 98 mixed cargo cars derailed early Friday just after its lead engine entered Tunnel number 9 at the Tehachapi Loop in the Tehachapi Mountains.

No injuries were reported.

According to authorities, the first six railroad cars following the lead engine derailed at about 02:45.

None were inside the tunnel at the time of the incident.

Three of the cars that derailed were automobile carrier cars, it was not yet been determined if they held cargo.

The other three cars to derail were tank cars.

Two were empty and the third contained petroleum.

According to a Union Pacific Railroad representative, no leakage occurred.

The Kern County Fire Department's Hazmat Unit responded, and along with BNSF and Union Pacific Railroad employees, determined there was no danger to the public, according to the Union Pacific representative.

The derailment occurred along a single track of the railway, resulting in the rail line shutting down to all traffic.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
