Western Canadian Pacific Railway Stations

 Photo Internal link   Introduction

The definitive reference for learning about the Canadian Pacific Railway's stations in Western Canada has to be the one and only "Canadian Pacific's Western Depots" written by Charles W. Bohi and Leslie S. Kozma. This 168 page hardcover book with photographs and text documents the construction of many types of stations built by the railway throughout the West beginning from the inception of the first station in 1879. The book contains history and detail on a very complex subject that goes much further than this simple article can provide. If you wish to learn more then please consider this book your bible to western CPR stations.

 Internal link   Station Types

As far as Canadian Pacific Railway was concerned they had their own classification system to identify a particular type of station. According to the authors this CPR system of organization appears to have been lost, or is no longer apparent. As a result the authors created their own method to identify each type of station constructed. While there are exceptions to their classification system, which this brief article will ignore, they ascribed each station to one of 16 types, numbered 1 to 16, plus a type named "portable". A portable station being specifically designed to be small enough to fit on a flatcar for ease of transport and use on a CPR rail line anywhere. This article uses their "type" system while attempting to provide one or more photographs of each type.
